IKE’S LIST OF DOMAINS AT AUCTION FOR Tuesday, November 13th

Escrow.com

Sometimes I just can’t think of anything to talk about. It used to be no problem, I could sit down and pick one random thought out of my head and write something about it. Maybe I’m getting boring and don’t have any new thoughts or ideas, or maybe i’m getting old and the brain is slowing down. I know I’m getting old because I think I have fishing elbow.

It’s like tennis elbow, but from fishing. I don’t know if it’s a real thing, (I was gonna write “reel thing”, but thought that would be pushing the limits of douchery) I may have made it up, but my damn right arm in the area on my elbow hurts when I move it and more so, when I try to lift anything.

I think the key point for me to take away, is that if I’m getting beat up from fishing, it may be time to come up with a fitness plan.

So if you would like me to talk about something in particular, let me know in the comments. There’s only so many times I can talk about buy it now pricing, or whine and complain about different registrars before I wear it out.

Will compareinsurance.com get renewed?  According to readers of DSAD,  the owner of that and other Compare domains that recently expired and went through the auction process is playing a game at Tucows.  He lets his name expire, lets it go to auction, and then tries to sell it based on where it went at auction.  CompareInsurance.com for instance went for $16,750 at a recent expiry auction at Godaddy. (Godaddy sells Tucows expiring domain inventory for them).  At one point the seller had a BIN of $15,500.  That’s since been removed and I imagine it will come back up a little more.  Godaddy has been trying to stop this practice for years and has cut it down extensively on their platform and I imagine they’ll cut it out on Tucows’ as well.   On one hand you have to give domain owners a fair chance to renew.  On the other hand you don’t want to piss off domain investors that are throwing down $16K on domains and waste their time.  My guess is the name gets picked up because Ken, the person that pointed it out, is hardly ever wrong. Here are today’s names.  Click through to see the current price

Quote of the Day:   Was it a bad day? Or was it a bad five minutes that you milked all day?”

Domain of the Day:  Tulin.com      Last name, city, and big money brand

Namejet and Sedo Names and Others

Gapo.com   I think it sells with the reserve at this reasonable number.  Someone is going to own a  nice new CVCV

CBBR.com   Another nice one here with 4 good letters.  Again should meet reserve.

Tenic.com    Estibot doesn’t like this one but you know I do

MindForce.com  One of those names I went in hoping there was one or just a few bids and then I went to the auction.  65

Compu2000.com  this sound 100% like a 90s name.  And it is

TalentWanted.com   Don’t fall for it.  You’re going to be a cam model

Godaddy Domains That I Like With Multiple Bids

Rippled.com   The price is going to get high because of the cryptocurrency, not the water movement

ChicagoFreePress.com Was a popular LGBT paper in Chicago that went out of business in 2010. Get it rolling again.

Botta.com  Price shows its more than just a pretty 5L.  Botta is a surname and a designer’s name as well.

Pod1.com   Memorable and short.  That’s all you need to give a name value

PeopleStation.com  Sounds like a name made up byElon Musk

YueShen.com  Chinese name and like all Chinese names, price is sky high

Yongju.com   Ditto.   Might as well buy all the Chinese names today

LabShop.com Top number of bids on the GD board at press time

WellPaid.com  What everyone wants to be.  Help them get there

Streo.com   Rolls off the tongue.  Might want to buy Streeo if you’re going to build out

OSHQ.com  HQ for headquarters

EarlyFunding.com  Early money has the highest risks and the best returns

NiceVideo.com   Positive name.  Not as fun as Live Leak

Xoqi.com   All CVCV, especially expiring, have great value right now

UPYA.com     People are going to throw ass at the end of this one

BuyCBDOils.com   I’m surprised how many CBD oil names expired and then again when I saw that they got some pretty good bids

RevYou.com Godaddy values this at $5400 .  Bidders at $60

RebootYourLife.com  Some times you just need to do a hard restart

SalmonKings.com  Become the king with one simple purchase

Godaddy Domains With One or No Bids

PoshPost.com The name of the shipping system used at Posh Mark. But could also be its own entity

Stroob.com Nice 6L.com brand. Short, double O words make good brands in my opinion. Don’t buy based on it. Just making a statement

Smoor.com  Another one but not doing quite as well

TipShop.com TopShop is a big clothing brand. This could be a “buy me a coffee” type brand

DotMom.com The net and the org also up for sale. Moms run the world

TheTipSheet.com  People have been selling tip sheets for centuries. Will continue just in digital form

CelebrityPoop.com  Worst celeb site EVER

BikeKeep.com There is a company called Bikeep that makes commercial bike racks and mounts.   Probably because they couldn’t get this one at the time

Stampage.com  When a stampede turns into a rampage

FlatRun.com  The fastest kind of run but I think this makes a good brand. No bids

Yudor.com  One bid at $12

EmergeTechnology.com  Upgrade name for a handful of companies

SweepRight.com   I think broom when I see this brand.  That’s all I got.  Broom all the way

LoyaltyX.com  Not sure there’s any value here but loyalty programs are big business

PrisonDiet.com  Corn and dick

WeAreFast.com I bet somebody will want to brag for a few hundred dollars

SolarConsultation.com  Many want to go solar.  They just don’t know real cost or how to go about it.   Consultants can fill this void

LuckyJoy.com  Sounds like an Asian restaurant

I’m almost clean.  I’ve spent the last 6 months dropping the junk from my portfolio.  Stuff that I was pretty sure was never going to sell.  Not a nibble in 5 years.  Dot .nets, .info, and all the other alt tlds that don’t sell anymore.   It has my portfolio down to 400.  A much easier portfolio to manage and for the most part only good names left.  There are still some names that others think I’ll never sell but they are at a minimum and they’re still there for various reasons.

I try to add only quality but I still find myself adding names that are under $100.  But I think they are names that I can sell for $800 to $3500. As long as I keep selling them I’ll keep adding them.    I had a few people look over my names and give me 2nd and 3rd opinions and the first to go were the ones we all said “What? Why would you buy that?” .  I was absolutely not offended.  I don’t pretend to know more than others and sometimes I talk myself into why a name would be good.  I wake up the next day and realize I was way off in my thinking.  I do have to explain a few of my names because its a niche I understand that they may not know about.  But in general anyone should be able to look at a name and know whether they would brand their company with that word or words or use the term in a marketing campaign.  If the answer is no from several people you may not have a good domain.  I’ve looked at some of the best domain investors and it shows me that everyone has some complete junk in their portfolio they need to get rid of.

I highly recommend you have a trusted domain friend look over you portfolio for definite scratch names. They could save you a lot of $8 renewals that you can put into good names.   But don’t ask look over your portfolio.   I barely have enough time for my little portfolio right now.

Here are today’s names.  Click through to see the current price

Escrow.com

I have no idea what is going on at Enom but this registrar is completely jacked up.  Kevin Fink and I bought a domain Lunchbox.io at Namejet.   It was moved into my Enom account.  Kevin and I sold Lunchbox.io.  I put in for the auth code and got it.  Sent it to the buyer and he put in a transfer.  The transfer email never came.  I made sure my email and contact info was correct.  It was.   When we checked with the buyer he let me know that the email was going to someone else. That someone else was the person that sold the domain at Namjet, i.e. the old registrant.  And that info was NOT in my contact info.  But I recognized the name.  He was somebody that I had emailed back and forth so I emailed him and asked if he received a transfer request.  He had

He asked me if there was anything he could do to help so I asked him to approve it.  The fact that I have to ask the previous registrant to agree to a transfer is ridiculous.  It’s just lucky I knew him.  But it gets crazier.  The buyer gets the name into his account, approves the Escrow.com transaction, and we get our money.  And the domain is still in my Enom account.  Now its in BOTH our accounts.  Yes Lunchbox.io is in both people’s accounts according to Enom. I took this screenshot last night.

I haven’t called Enom because its actually the new owner’s issue now.  I also don’t feel like talking to anyone at Enom because their service has been less than stellar.  And they let you know right at the top.  ” We’re aware of Partially Degraded Service” .  The partially is to be debated but they are on the right track.   The next question is can I even transfer out my other domains right now.  Who knows who is going to get my transfer emails.  Let’s hope I know them too.

And finally, CompareInsurance.com and all the other domains from that owner got renewed as expected.  From a reader

Ken is right it looks like they got renewed but interestingly though the domain redirects to https://berecycled.org/ which is also connected to another so called non profit agency www.kab.org   so they must be connected to the same owner whoever is behind all this seems to purchase high traffic domains for example recently clickjobs.com and before that pandawill.com and neither were cheap which is strange for a so called non profit. The alexa rank for berecycled.org goes from literally nothing to 78k in a few weeks

Godaddy better get that fixed because the owner is playing a game at Godaddy’s expense. Here are today’s names.  Click through to see the current price

It’s the middle of November and there’s snow on the ground. I was at work when it the storm started, people were crashing all over the place. Last year we didn’t get much snow, but a storm this early doesn’t seem like a good omen for the rest of the winter.

The list is coming later than normal, I just wanted a little nap last night and then I was would finish. I woke up after my nap wondering why the sun was up. Luckily I trained my daughter at the age of 2 to make me coffee, so I woke her up and bribed her to make a pot. She used to love making me coffee, now I have to coerce, or bribe her to do it.

It’s about time to start finishing up the plans for Namescon in Vegas.  I haven’t booked a hotel yet but I always stay at the MGM. I would love to help the conference and get a room at the Tropicana but I really like my room at the MGM each year.  And if you walk out the door at the registration desk you just have to cross the street and come right in the door near the Sportsbook.  You don’t have to walk all the way across the casino and across the crosswalk like everyone thinks.  People made a big deal because it was closed last year but I don’t even use it.  It makes the walk 3 times as long if you go that way.

We’re going to give away some free tickets to Namescon on Domain Sherpa so you’ll want to watch Monday’s episode to find out how.   Monday’s show is the DSAD edition of Domain Sherpa with Josh and I joining Andrew and Tess.  Josh always gives a good alternative viewpoint as a guy that does well with the lower cost end of domains.  He doesn’t buy many names over $100 but constantly sells names for $1000 to $20,000.   Which you have to when you have as many names as he does. It’s a model many try and copy but few can do it.  Plenty lose money trying.  Because anyone can buy names.  Only the best can buy names that companies actually want. Enjoy your Sunday. Here are today’s names.  Click through to see the current price

Quote of the Day:  “There are things you do for your kids that they will never remember. But if you don’t do them they will never forget.” – Clint Morgan

Domain of the Day:  BirthdayParties.com  Billions of these are thrown a year. GD has an $11,000 valuation on this one

Namejet and Sedo Names and Others

Hydras.com  Met reserve.  I always think of water when I see a name with hyd at the beginning if its hydra and not hydro

ClimbingCenter.com   A bit generic but there is usually a climbing wall in every major city in the US.  Booked with kids birthday parties

UrbanJewelry.com  Don’t have to sell many pieces to pay for the domain

UltimateSalon.com   Upgrade name for dozens of places that share the name

DLII.com   1996 birthday.  I for International

Millimeter.com  I bet this goes for $2500 plus. I sold decimeter at one point although its sold 2 or 10 times since

Saho.com  this one is going to kill it.  CVCV with great letters.  $7500 plus is my guess

WeatherFly.com   No bids on this expiry name.  I think its a great name for a weather app or site

PrimeDev.com    Prime development.  Prime Developers.   One bid

CleverKitchen.com   Gets 122 visits a month.  One bid

Xelo.com   I think this is probably worth more than the current bid of $3500. My opinion only

Godaddy Domains That I Like With Multiple Bids

Kissa.com   It always starts with a kiss.  Highest valuation on the board

Pickem.com  So many uses.  Gambling or fantasy sports is where I would guess it will land

MSL.net  As good of letters as you could have in a LLL.net

TennisFactory.com  Tennis academy and coaching all the way

Koira.com  Means dog in Finnish, a town in India, and sounds like a pretty girl you met in college

Dezzi.com  Getting some bids.  I knew a guy named Dezzi

HuaGao.com   I didn’t even look at the auction and I knew it would be at a couple grand because it was a Chinese name

TSCoin.com  An existing crypto coin

IAppreciateYou.com    My wife used to have a guy at work that said this to her every day.  Someone at a lecture must have told him to appreciate others and he took it to the max

CryptoHere.com   Let them know you take crypto

Godaddy Domains With One or No Bids

[g]Flashloans.com[/g]  Small quick loans.  No bids

[g]JetStat.com[/g] Jet anything probably has some value

People often ask me about my sell through rate. Sometimes when they do I mentally plan to figure it out, but then I start trying to figure it out and give up. I stop mainly because it’s a pain in the ass for me to do, and I feel like I could use the time doing something to improve whatever that rate actually is rather than figure it out.

In reality, it’s a hard number to pin down, because it’s a dynamic environment. The number of domains I own fluctuates daily, based on the amount of time I spend searching, money allocated to new domains, renewals and if I auctioned off any expiring names wholesale. The bottom line is that if I don’t sell domains I don’t buy as many, I renew less and auction more.

I don’t think there’s a right formula. Every domain sold to an end user is based on timing more than anything else. There’s no magic number to shoot for or percentage of sales that’s acceptable. You need to have confidence in your names that someone or some company will eventually want them. You should re-evaluate this confidence level at least every year before you renew the domain.

I know that I can sell a bunch of names wholesale if I choose and have a really high sell through rate. I know that I can price my domains from $300 to $999 and sell more domains than if they’re priced $2K-$5K.   There is no right answer to this, it’s different for every style and can change at anytime.

I’ll repeat this point again: You have to have confidence in your domain.  Not the obnoxious confidence that says it’s the best domain in the world, but confidence that it has a reasonable chance of selling at some point to an end-user because its the kind of name that an end-user wants.

If you think your names are awesome but then try really hard to hustle them to other domainers you don’t  have confidence in them.  Don’t get me wrong there’s nothing wrong with cash flow, wholesaling  and moving inventory, but it shouldn’t be your end game.

So maybe ill still try and figure out some ballpark sell through number for a specified period of time. I’m sure there’s value to the data, but it gives me chest pain trying to organize that by myself. Maybe I’ll hire some sort of organizational specialist and have them do it. Play to your strengths, I gave up trying to stay super organized years ago, because I suck at it. Should I learn anyway? Probably.

Andrew Alleman of Domain Name Wire had a great interview with fellow domain investor and friend Mark Levine yesterday. I know Mark’s great backstory but was really looking forward to hearing the details of how his year went.  The great part about Mark is he keeps excellent records and doesn’t mind sharing details.  You’ve heard me mention how the details are how we learn and he provided plenty.  I took notes as I listened and although I think you should listen to the whole interview here are my notes and some of the interesting facts.

  • $118,000 in sales on cost of $3400
  • 48 domains
  • Inbound sales only, no outbound sales
  • 15 of the names were .io, the rest were .com
  • All brandable names except for one 3 letter .io
  • 25% were purchased on park , all .io of course, average $100 each
  • the rest of the .io were hand regged, some as late as 2018
  • 45% of the names were purchased on Godaddy auctions
  • 4 names were purchased through Namepros (all.io)
  • 34% of the names were sold on Brandbucket
  • StoryTone.com was purchased for $12 and sold for $2300, 3 years later
  • SeatSide.com, LaunchCart.com were some examples of names that were sold
  • 3 names were purchased at Namejet
  • Sales average is $2500 per name
  • Feels that if you price right you can get people to make impulse buys
  • Negotiation is not comfortable for some so BIN makes it easy
  • Has adjusted prices upward as time and sales move forward
  • 18% sales through Afternic
  • 44% through Efty landing pages
  • Have not added any names to Brandbucket in over a year
  • Efty tends to be a negotiation sale and not usually a BIN
  • Because of this his BIN is higher to establish higher value
  • Has 1200 name so roughly $12K in renewals
  • Spent $20K on new names so $32K in total cost give plenty of cash flow and profits
  • Hardest part is finding new names at lower prices
  • Can spend 15 minutes per name going over one name

Here are today’s names.  Click through to see the current price and to fund this daily list

Josh’s computer died while on duty so I get to do his opening for him.  Sometimes people forget we put these things together while trying to work our “normal” jobs and be part of a family and have some sort of social life.  Even with that we’ve missedA less than 20 days in NINE year.  Having three of us has helped greatly so I can actually do the above but we still get stuck some times.   Josh has pulled a 96 hour shift as a paramedic.  While Josh seems to be able to do it, it really pushes his phone and computer to the limits.  Of course you can just bring a charging cord.  That seems like the answer but how many times have you rushed out the door and forgotten things.  Heck I’ve left for work without my lunch, wallet AND phone. Fortunately I live 1.5 miles away.  Josh has over an hour drive, and I think it might be 2 or more, to work.  Anyway, Josh E. everyone ……………

I’m sick of winter already and it’s not even winter yet. The temperature has been low enough that it makes fishing a chore, and it won’t stop raining. I used to like winter or at least the change of seasons. There’s an excitement in the air before a snow storm, I used to love it, but now I think about the traffic it causes, wet shoes and shoveling.

The one benefit to winter as far as domaining goes, is being able to sit at your computer for hours on end and not feel guilty about it. It’s too cold to go outside and do something active, so I feel better about wasting away starring at a screen. Maybe I’m just getting old, or maybe I need to find a better winter hobby.

I had someone one message me at NamePro’s the other day, they wanted to know if they could pay for my picks off the pending delete lists. It’s not the first time someone has asked and I’m not totally opposed to doing it, I just don’t know how to make it worth my time but affordable to someone, while taking into account the potential lose to my portfolio.  How do I even calculate that? and how do I insure some level of quality if I did do it. As it stands now, there might be weeks when I don’t even look because I’m taking a break or just don’t have the time or motivation. Other times I’ll come up with 250 names a day for weeks straight that I’ll try and pick up.

So if you have any ideas how to do this let me know.

You know I like buy and sell posts that have real names with real sales. Or at least names and prices. I have no idea if they are real.  But its a heck of a lot more fun to read than “a name for some price”.  Joshua Schoen had a sales and pickup list yesterday if you’re interested in reading another person’s list.

And I talked to a few “larger” domain investors yesterday and they like me, had a big increase in Afternic sales in 2018. To the point where we agreed that Afternic changed the game in our sales.  Being in the Godaddy search program just makes it so easy for people to buy names. And they did.  It’s become the number one thing you do when you buy a name.

And so about the short list today.  Not sure if there just weren’t any good names or I was tired from loading hundreds of Christmas trees on to cars.  It’s the time of year where I have three seasons colliding.  Regular tree sales, Christmas sales, and snow and salt.  Add in end of year and it gets a bit hectic.  But its all over soon and I can move into planning and domains again. And a little rest. Kind of rest.  Found out I got in to the Berlin marathon and I turn 50 this year so I want to make it special. Going to work hard this year to make that happen.  Here are today’s names.  Click through to see the current price and to fund this daily list

Quote of the Day:  “My religion is very simple. My religion is kindness” -Dalai Lama

Domain of the Day: OnEmile.com      This shows the importance of proper Camel Casing.  The domain is OneMile but it displayed on my list this one.  I like OneMile.com better

Namejet and Sedo Names and Others

FreshShelf.com    A great brand the exudes healthy and of course fresh. Two things most people are looking for.  Getting close to reserve

OpenCouples.com   Swinger site ready and waiting. No bidders

NameWho.com  Price is super cheap now since who is took a big hit lately

Tegia.com  comes down to the reserve. Like the name a lot though

DataHat.com   No bids.  Like the brand.   Like the price

Godaddy Domains That I Like With Multiple Bids

NoHope.com  1996 birthday.  A negative name but could be turned around

BareBottom.com  I have an innocent mind.  I think of the Coppertone ad when I see this name

AWP.net  Another nice LLL.net expiring.  This is one I would actually buy. I generally just leave .nets alone

qr-code.com   QR codes and code makers are still in practical use

LWGN.com   Great letters.  These have been going for a lot less with the Chinese out of the game

RockVault.com   Sounds like something secure

CryptoBusiness.com   I figured this would do well.  And it is. Just not as much as it would have last year

Drabe.com   5L with two bidders

HighPotency.com   gotta get the good stuff

FS33.com  I love these.  Means something in Chinese I have no idea what but its desired and expensive

HomeDecorCenter.com   Gets good traffic.  Home decor = Billions

CannaCorp.com  We talk about these types of names on Sherpa on Monday

Tingl.com   Funny how in 2007 these were used because they could be hand regged.  Now they are desired

Bitzio.com  A bitcoin name. Doesn’t mean what it used to

Enerplex.com  1999 energy name

PlumbingLeads.com   you know something is expensive(and profitable)  if you get a lot of money for just getting a lead

Gallinger.com  Popular last name so you know its going to be a brand now and eventually

WeedBreak.com  the new smoke break

Godaddy Domains With One or No Bids

Bedlo.com  Great name for a mail order bed. No bids

OpenMedic.com Online medical care.  Or open source medicine.  I made up the open source thing

TapPress.com Decent name for a mobile publishing app or site

Natural.cc  I’m not telling anyone to buy a .cc but this one is worth looking at IMO. Don’t buy, just look

NudeFacesitting.com  I have an innocent mind. I think of …….yeah, this one’s pretty adult

We have a new show from DomainSherpa up today.  I think we’re going to start mixing it up soon because the portfolios just suck.  The actual talk about the portfolios themselves is helping nobody when we keep saying “Don’t do this” as our advice. But the talk around the portfolio and where it leads is generally pretty interesting.  I think we can do more.  The pre show and post show are awesome. Are they on topic?  Not always.   But I think they would be entertaining.  Some of the best stuff is when you let people just starting talking and see where it leads.  Especially if your have some interesting people on the show.

I saw a post by Alvin Brown that a bunch of emoji domains are expiring.  It’s amazing that I took a bunch of shit ever since I told everyone I was buying .ws.  Yet others constantly talk about these emoji domains on .ws that are even MORE worthless than keywords and numeric .ws.  Of course not all of them but they are a fad and serve no practical use in my opinion.  People use them to communicate on text but are not looking to them to navigate the web. They could but I don’t think they will.  We could also 3D car parts in our house but we’re probably not going to.  I guess I should have put a smile face to the left of .ws instead of two letters.  I made the mistake and learned, and eventually others will as well.

I also am $340 away from meeting my fundraising $5,000 goal on my Iten trip.  So close.  Here is a little about the trip and my inspiration.  Enjoy your Monday

As Shane posted yesterday,  the latest DomainSherpa.com review came out Monday. Shane talked about mixing it up on the show in the future because the portfolios are so bad. I remember several years ago Cyger would take one domain  submission from anyone that wanted to submit a name for the upcoming show. There might be 30 domains but all from different people. I always like this idea because every week I’d have a chance to see if the domain I submitted was talked about. Maybe they should bring this back or do it every once in awhile.

Another idea is to have the submitter give an explanation as to why the hell they registered the name, followed by their thought process on why this name, out of all they might own, was submitted for review. That would give the Sherpa’s points to discuss with the submitter, and not just politely dismiss the portfolio as the registrations of a lunatic. But damn, It is unfathomable to me that so many people just keep doing the same things over and over. I mean there is no way these people are watching the other episodes and thinking, “hmmm, maybe my names are different and awesome”. It’s time for tough love, feelings may get hurt, but you’ll be better for it. You’ll not only save money, you might actually make some too.

Maybe the point’s not being made clearly and loudly enough: WILL SOMEONE OR SOME BUSINESS BUY THIS DOMAIN? When it comes down to it, that is the only question that matters. I have a hard time believing the portfolio submitter was like “hells yes! Jackpot! I just bought Upper Abdomen in the .com! You hear that? Ching Ching, that’s the sound of the cash register bringing in the money!”

I pulled some domains that are available to register based on some of the root words used in the list. I didn’t even like most of the root words that made up the list, but I used them anyway. As always, these names may not sell, may not even be “good” domains, but I think they’re better than the submitted list. They were all previously registered so they’re not potential traditional “hand registrations” I’m calling these “reg fee resurrections”, names that were deleted at some point in the past.

I sold two domains in yesterday that I don’t own anymore. I guess I should have said I was notified that someone else’s domains sold. It reminds me of the importance of keeping my accounts up to date, if for no other reason than to not hear about sales on domains you let drop.  It’s not a good feeling to get the ” your domain just sold” email, and then not be able to find it anywhere in your account.

In both cases HugeDomains owns my former domain. If anyone wants proof that volume and huge portfolios can work, you should try and track what they own and sell. The same thing applies if you’re having trouble identifying the type of names that will sell.  They deal in real scientific data, not the chaos and unorganization that I revel in.

NamesCon is coming up and you’re going to hear all different thoughts from various people about why they go and why they don’t.  I’ll tell you that like everything is life, the conference is what you make it.  If you want to go and make connections and put in some effort you absolutely will.  I remember the first time I met Mike Sallese.  We were either at a live Domain Sherpa show (before I was a regular) or a live auction.  I can’t remember which but a name came up.  ButterCrackers.com.  He walked up to me and said “that’s my name” .   Hey said it with such a smile and looked so proud of the name that for the rest of the show I called him ButterCrackers.  Half because I couldn’t remember his name but because it was a hilarious domain.  Not too long after I got back I received a package addressed to me at the nursery from Mike.  Yup.  A big box of generic butter crackers.  We’ve been friends ever since.

It shows that just a little something that breaks the ice, starts the conversation, or is memorable could build a relationship. There is no such thing as good old boys club for most attendees.  A smiling face and a handshake will pretty much do the trick. Add that initial meeting to a gathering at night and the stories will flow.  Its amazing what a few beers will do to a conversation.  The bar at the Tropicana is always a great place to start.  You’ll see the who’s who of domain investing there at some point and the evening almost always starts and ends there.

If anyone blows you off then you really didn’t want to work with them anyway.  And don’t get upset if someone ignores you or doesn’t acknowledge you.  Again,  its part of business. I’ve been active for 9 years and dozens of people ignore me in every room I enter. Heck, We didn’t even make the top 10 domain blogs for Daryl Lopes……..yesterday. And there are only 8 active blogs.  Not everyone is going to be your best friend and your new domain friend.  But there will be some that get you.  And those some will make you happier and more profitable because you’ll be able to share information that will make you a better domain investor.  Sure, you could meet them via email but meeting them in person and putting a face to a relationship is always a better start.  NamesCon gives you that opportunity.  4 days of it.

Like I said, the afternoon and evening is where everything happens.  My advice would be to sleep in and stay out late.  It would also be to pace and limit your drinking.  A drink or two to smooth the edges always is good for a conversation but too many and you because known as the drunk guy instead of the guy you’d like to talk more to. Another piece of advice is to bring your story.  People remember who you are by what you do for living or hobby when you’re not domain investing.   Josh is is a paramedic EMT,  Cyger was a Six Sigma expert, Drew Rosener was the fish guy. Everyone was something else when they first started.  If you have a big name , and make sure its really a nice name, make sure people know that.  Steven Kennedy was the Strawberries guy because he was a very young kid at the time but he owned Strawberries.com, or maybe it was Strawberry.  But either way it was how we knew him.   In short, give people something to remember you by.

I know this is socializing 101 but I write this every year to remind people what a great opportunity lies ahead at our biggest conference.  Anyone that thinks they don’t need it is limiting themselves. I don’t think you have to go every year but its a must every couple years IMO.  I can almost guarantee that there will be a relationship or a helpful tip or trick that will pay for the entire trip.  If you think you don’t have time I’ll tell you what my wife says when I say I can’t make it to her parents for the weekend.  “When you really want to do something you always find a way to make it happen. If your friends ask you to somewhere you suddenly are able to get off work.  When I ask you to go to my parents its always an important weekend and you can’t get off.  Make THIS something you really want to do”  So I say the same thing.  Find time.  Make NameCon something you really want to do,  Here are today’s names.  Click through to see the current price and to fund this daily list

Escrow.com

I’m not really sure what’s going on with today’s auction, maybe someone’s API bidding tool is broken. There’s about 30 7N’s with bids and a bunch of 4L org’s.  There’s nothing special about either group that I can tell. Normal 6n chips, normal as in nothing fancy, have been dropping all month. A few weeks ago there was around 15K of them and most are still available to register.

It seems insane wasting money buying 6n’s at auction, and completely bat shit crazy buying 7n’s in any setting. This from someone that had a quite of few of both. :) I actually can still see the value of 6n’s theoretically, but not practically. I used to think that since anyone can remember a 7 or 10 digit phone number a 6 digit numeric domain is super easy to remember, but who remembers phone numbers anymore? I used to have all kinds of phone numbers memorized simply from the frequency of use, but now I couldn’t tell you 95% of the numbers I call regularly.

Speaking of phones, I get a ton of spam and robo calls. I think everyone does, but I made the mistake of using my real phone number  on the whois info a couple of years ago. That was a mistake, even before the IRS scam calls, I would get calls from India from “app developers” who were scraping whois data.

I don’t answer numbers I don’t have in my phone unless I’m expecting a call, but it’s still a pain in the ass silencing my phone 25 times a day as the same scams spoof different numbers.

I found a fun solution in an app. It’s called RoboKiller, and it screens and answers suspected spam or robo calls with funny prerecorded messages. You can listen to the recording of  spammer trying and talk to your random or selected fake message.

Click the links for current prices, most links are commissionable and fund the operation.

Rando.com or RanDo.com  probably works better as the first one, nice little brandable or a single word that means: “a person one does not know, especially one regarded as odd, suspicious, or engaging in socially inappropriate behavior.”

Escrow.com

You know its a slow day when 3 of the top four stories in the domain industry are about Uniregistry removing Topcoin.  Something nobody cared about when it was introduced and nobody cared about when it was removed.   I am a big fan of Uniregistry.  I think the interface is as good as any registry in the industry.  I think Domain Name Sales works as hard as any team to negotiate a sale and follow up on leads.  They have one major flaw. They don’t have a way to make money except on registrations.  And that gives Godaddy a HUGE advantage.  Godaddy has expiring auctions, hosting, and service add ons that give them the ability to essentially give away renewals and registration.  They can also put the money into staff to manually handle all the big accounts.  I literally get a call from Adam every time a name leaves my account.  A friendly conversation and a pin number.  Not two factor, not face ID, but a phone call from someone I know.    It’s as safe as it gets.  But even with all that, Uni still puts out a better product when it comes to modern day usability.  They just don’t have any reason to keep a domain there so that we can use that awesome app.  Frank will figure it out.  Especially if he asks questions out of his inner circle.  But that’s a subject for another day.  Enjoy your Sunday

Quote of the Day:  When you make a mistake, there are only three things you should ever do about it: admit it, learn from it, and don’t repeat it.” – Paul “Bear” Bryant  (my daughter is named after Bryant)

Domain of the Day:  Investigating.com   Even with the ing its one of the top names on the board today.  But the list isn’t super strong so it didn’t take much

Namejet, Sedo, and other Names Up for Auction

AutoFactory.com  Such a great name for a new or used car dealer.  Worth every penny of the reserve IMO

AutoPartsStore.com  A little boring but it’ll play

HeartNetwork.com  Met reserve at $69 .  Sounds like a charitable group

Biello.com   A last name so eventually it will be a brand

CustomDetailing.com  Upgrade name for dozens of detail shops around the nation

BarbaraBush.com  This needs to go to her estate

ProfessionalCare.com  Good for pretty much any service industry. Expiry name so no reserves

Godaddy Domains With Multiple Bids

Rando.com   Some use the term for “random” some rando.  Also a last name.  5L pronounceable alone is good enough.  20 years old

TimeBeing.com    For the time being is a saying people use in place of “for now”

WineFactory.com  I don’t think wine and factory go together real well but lots of bidders and they know more than me

Sock.org  The dot org brings it down and the singular but every person I know wears two of these every single day

VPSA.com  If I buy an LLLL.com with a V in it.  This is exactly where I want it.  First letter.  Then A or C at the end and its a very nice domain IMO

DeerLeases.com  It’s a valuable name not because of leasing a deer but leasing hunting ground to hunt deer is a big business

Buyec.com  Nice little 5L with Buy in the name

FatLossSecrets.com  Seems like a name I’d see next to the Outbrain ads

Godaddy Domains With One or No Bids

55andUp.com  The dating site for those with experience

HighPuff.com Canna name for $12

CornerCoin.com  Godaddy is valuing coin names way too high.  Its based on past sales and the past few years have skewed the algorithm

RadTeam.com 1998 birthday.  The word Rad is falling out of favor but we all still know what it means

Chinatron.com  The big machine that is China

GrowthKings.com  Business growth,  personal growth, financial growth

Zapsi.com  I like it but you’re going to have to have Zapsy as well

CentralPark2.com Because y0u know there is going to be some establishment that will name themselves this

GetKiwi.com  Travel name or sell some fruit

WeHaveThePower.com  Good marketing name for a solar company.  No bids

SugarTaxes.com Cities around the nation are implementing this.  One bidder

Opportunity.cc  I know its .cc but opportunity is all you can ask for

GoldLime.com Kind of contradictory but like the shortness and easy spelling

360Athlete.com “Building the complete athlete”

Kuaga.com  Cool sounding name in my opinion.  And actually spells like it sounds

MomsDinner.com  Great name for a meal delivery service….or catering company

RootDrive.com 1999 domain with no bids

SantaScore.com  Buy it. Make it a site where kids can check their score.  The higher the score the better chance that Santa is coming to their house

TheBudLounge.com  A smooth place to hang out
