I’ve discovered a test that will instantly tell if someone has Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).  While I’m lucky enough to have been blessed with the complete opposite of OCD, I do see the value in keeping everything in order, in there place and organized. So here’s what you do to see if someone you know or just met has OCD. You show them a phone like this. If they have OCD they will lose there mind, they won’t be able to handle so many unread messages. They will demand that you delete or read all of them, which obviously is impossible at this point. Who has time to deal with 200K emails?  Plus you can always just search for the email you need. It’s like your own private blockchain of information.

This doesn’t have to be used as a test, you can simply use it to freak out people with OCD. In fact after seeing a phone like this they’ll also likely have PTSD.

My Dad has decided he is going to stay in Naples for the hurricane.   It’s not really the smartest choice he’s made but he wanted to get the place secured for the storm and by the time it was time to leave he was more worried about getting caught in traffic or having trouble getting gas than he was about the storm.  Of course that changed a little the last few days and now he really gets to experience it.  That’s the story he’s going to tell you.   He had plenty of time.  I called him 4 days ago and told him to leave.  I think at first he took it too lightly and then he hunkered down like he’s going to stranded for a month.  And he could be.  Generators, other backup power.  Bathtub full of water.  Food for a month.  His place is hurricane proof and 3 miles from the water so he really should be just fine. The problem is going to be outside and leaving for a while.  Its going to be pretty ugly. He got tired of people calling to tell him how stupid he was.  I called him and told him to put the will and write his name on his arm. He called me back because I was the only one that taking it in stride.  I honestly would have done the same thing.  I am an adventurer and while I have no desire lose my life,  I have no problem climbing a mountain or doing things that aren’t all that safe.   I even drove to my house ahead of a tornado that was absolutely headed my way.   I had a storm shelter in my basement and knew that I would be safe and there was no way I was letting my wife go through it alone. It did end up destroying everything but we got through it, nobody died and only a few broken bones in town.   Hoping my Dad has the same experience or less and no broken bones.

Now on to domains: There is something the auction house HAVE to start doing.  On any new gTLD, they need to put the renewal price of the domain.  I don’t care where they get it.  What registrar they support when they say what the price is somewhere.  Not knowing giving the information to the buyers is careless and leaving key information that the buyers need.   “that is the due diligence of the buyer”  Is knowing the car I just bought was in a flood my responsibility as well?  A seller should give as much information about the product as they can.  If they can’t give that out then they have no business selling the product in my opinion.  Looking forward to seeing which auction house starts doing this first.   Here are today’s names. Click for most recent price

I started my transition this week from giving talks on straight gardening to giving talks about business, family, and the journey of building a life.  I also started charging a larger fee so I can actually pay for my time and not just promote the nursery.  It went pretty well but I have found that most people just aren’t used to hearing a good speaker.  A person that is having a good time on stage, knows their content, and delivers with some humor and enthusiasm.   I have a lot of good experiences that I can pull out of the bag and domain investing is certainly helped in that realm.   Meeting Kim Kardashian, getting sick at the grotto of the Playboy mansion, and various other “adventures” in the journey to create a domain business.   Add in working in a 5th generation green operation with your family on a day to day business and I am pretty diverse.  There is plenty of speech material.   In short, it went well and I think if I add a few more pieces to the final ending of my business puzzle I can start doing a lot more of these.  I just have to have a few more reasons for people to book me so I can tell me stories.   Here are today’s names. Click for most recent price

One of the best things with buying and selling domains is the ability to quickly change strategy, pivot or try different things without much hassle. This whole game is a learning process that works differently for every single investor. Sure there are universal principles, but there are so many things that are subjective and have no “right” answer.

For example, over the last couple of months, I’ve sold some domains for a lot more than I had them listed for on platforms with BIN prices. I’ve also messed up and undersold names because I had them listed too low somewhere, got a higher offer, then lost the higher offer because they found it cheaper. While this doesn’t happen that often, it’s something to consider.

The point is, I’ve harped on listing names with reasonable BIN prices, but then my theory gets rocked by a sale that might be 10X the BIN list price, or a price that I envisioned listing it for but have yet to list it.

There are so many uncontrollable variables, and I don’t know what the right answer is. I do know that I will sell more names with a reasonable BIN price and selling creates momentum and builds confidence. So we’re  left with “gut” intuition, a little bit of luck and the ability to change the strategy if something’s not working or could work better.

The Heidi Powell case came to an end yesterday.  She lost the case and of course she is upset. I hate to see her lose her domain but there was an ingredient in the case that made every thing difficult.  Bankruptcy.  When people are owed money things get vicious.   I am not implying what happened here was fair but I am saying when people are owed money and someone is willing to pay big money for your assets, the probate is going to take that money to pay off your debts.  Even if it is something you deeply care about.  They just don’t care how important it is to you.  If its an asset that someone is willing to pay for, they are going to take the money.  She would have the domain if she didn’t have the bankruptcy.  This comes across as harsh but bankruptcy is harsh.  People think you can just declare bankruptcy, wipe away your bills, and keep your best stuff.  It doesn’t work that way.  You only keep the basic necessities to live and they try and get money for everything else.  The new Heidi Powell is an awful person to us but to the original Heidi’s creditors she is a savior.   The reason our industry is so supportive of Grandma Powell is she was down on her luck and someone was trying to take advantage. It sounds like the domain was her pride and joy. It was her.  Her name, he representation on the web. I get that. Unfortunately, domains are unique, people’s names are not.  And people are willing to fight for their names and often pay big money.  The latter part I am happy for.    Here are today’s names. I was talking to a new investor that was upset that I didn’t like his domain and it got me to thinking about something I wrote a few years ago.  Turns out I wrote in on DomainShane five years ago. Like most things I write it rambled a bit. Yet I think it still has value, and actually will always have value ,so I am going to reprint it here to read again.

People are defensive.  The less confident you are,  the more likely you will react to anything negative that comes your way.  But the reality is this. There is always going to be someone better than you at something that you do.  There is only person that is THE best at something and the billion other people are not. The difference between an adult and a child is the ability to recognize the difference between I Can’t and I won’t.   A child thinks they can’t achieve something, an adult realizes they can achieve almost anything but they won’t want to put the time and effort necessary to reach that goal because it would take away from so many other things.

As humans we love to come up with excuses why we aren’t better at something.  It usually comes down to time, money, or information.  The first one is a reality, but the fact of the matter is when most people say they don’t have the time they are not telling the truth.  People MAKE time for things they want to do.  You don’t have time to make it to your wife’s Christmas party but somehow you found a way to take time off of work to go to Vegas with your friends.  You want something bad enough, you make time.   Mark Cuban said something on Shark Tank that stayed with me.  He instantly said no to a guy on SharkTank because he was an Ironman.  He said that he would never invest in a guy that does triathlons.  He said a guy that trains 15 hours a week is wasting time that could be put into his business.  And that is absolutely true.  Hobbies take time that could be spent on your business.  It is why there are people that will be better than you. They go all in when most people mix their time among several different things.  I have come to the realization that I can never be great or the best at anything I do because I don’t want to go all in.  This is not a defeatist attitude, this is an intelligent attitude that acknowledges reality. Something that many people have difficulty doing because they take it personal that they may not be very good at something.

There are hundreds of men and women that are better domain investors than me.  Yet I still do pretty well.  I have set a goal that is realistic and I try and achieve it.  I originally set a goal of $10K profit each year.  Then I moved it to $30K and now it’s $50K.  I will move it to $100K.  Owen Frager reminds me daily that Schilling puts that much in his change jar each night.   I am wise enough to know that I am not Frank Schilling.  I am not jealous of Frank.  I admire Frank and love to hear his approach to making money.  Perhaps it will help me make more but beyond that I have nothing invested.  I am not star struck by those that have achieved more than I.  I only want to know what it took to get there and then analyze IF I would make certain investments is it possible to achieve and if it is, is that where I want to be.   I do this with everything, from being an actor, to running certain businesses, to achieving athletic goals.  As a 43 year old man that has had a ton of failures and successes I now can make accurate predictions of potential to achieve certain things.  And the answer to most of them is “Nope, not possible”

Again, this is not negative, its reality.  A reality that will help you achieve real goals and expand. Letting you have little victories along the way.  Keep you setting that bar higher until you reach that point where you can decide if you want to “go all in”.  Criticism of a guy that isn’t as good at something is meaningless.  Even if they think they are the best. It is the biggest problem I have.  I have always felt it was my duty to try and make people realize they aren’t as good as they think they are.  I realize it’s wrong, and each year I get a little better, but I still keep trying to put mirrors in front of other people when I should be worrying about my own.  The ironic part is I am even harder on myself.  Making sure that I am realistic about where I stand and what I can accomplish with what I’m willing to put forward.  I work my ass off at a lot of stuff and yet my returns are mediocre.  It’s because I put it into too many things.  I am good at a ton of things, I am great at none.

So I’ll leave you with this. Don’t worry about what others are doing in domain investing.  Don’t worry about others calling your domains pigeon shit.  But DO listen.  Listen because if one person says that you have bad domains then they may be just trying to get your goat.  If two people say that your portfolio has no value then it might just be chance.  But if 5 people tell you the same thing then they are right and you need to change directions if you hope to achieve success.  There is no such thing as everyone else being wrong.  Divvy up your time wisely.  Use it wisely but expect the results to be a direct relation to the effort put in.  Don’t be upset when someone is better than you because they worked harder at it.  Only worry about whether you got the results YOU expected from your effort.  Jealousy is the homage mediocrity pays to those that work harder ….or something like that.

I try not to profile my domain inquiries.  But I do.  I am almost 100% sure that when I get an inquiry for a domain from Nigeria that its going nowhere.  When I get one from India, there may be conversation but they will not be willing to pay what I am asking.  When I get one from Europe I get excited.  Half of my end user sales have been to Europe.   Yes, I realize that my stereotypes can be wrong. There are many Indian people and companies willing to pay good money for domains.  They just don’t often come my way.  Do I treat any of these any differently?  No, I just lower my expectations to nothing.   And so far I have been right on the money.  Or lack of money.  I’d love to hear your “good country, bad country” inquiries. Here are today’s names. As you can see its always a good idea to wear safety glasses everywhere you go. You never know when something will hit you in the fricken eye. Don’t worry about the strange looks you’ll get wearing safety glasses to the movie theater or grocery shopping, your eye sight is worth it.

I should have worn safety glasses last night while I was fishing. I got snagged on a rock gave it a yank and the lead weight came flying back and hit me in right in the eye. Obviously we kept fishing for another 4 hours, when I got home and looked at the eye I thought to myself, “well jeez, I should probably get that checked”.  I haven’t done that yet, I can see fine for the most part, though it looks like bugs are crawling up the wall in my periphery, but every time I look the damn things are gone.

Are your purchases this year better than the Domain King’s?   Rick Schwartz posted some of the names he’s purchased this year and my first thought was “I think mine are better” .  Of course he is MUCH better at selling his names than I am and that’s really what matters.   Here’s a picture that he tweeted of names he has purchased this year?   How do yours compare? Here are today’s names. It’s probably time to take down the DomainSherpa banners to the right.  I left them up in case Mike got a second wind.  But I saw a picture of him this weekend and he’s grown a beard. It’s official, he’s retiring.  You don’t just go and grow a beard or miss a few weeks shaving unless you got plans.  Or lack of plans.  Nothing says “I work at home and nobody is going to see me” or “I’m on permanent vacation” like facial hair.   Of course there are those like Elliot Silver who could go six or seven years and still look like a 15 year old Laotian boy’s facial hair.   So we will really never be able to tell when he’s in vacation mode.   And then there is Drew Rosener who grows a thick full beard if he doesn’t shave twice a day.  His five O’clock shadow needs beard oil.  But back to Mike, he’s out and his spots are for sale.  Make us an offer for the spots for a month.  We’ll probably take it.  Here are today’s names, you have to click to see current price.

Quote of the Day:  “Be grateful for what you have and stop complaining – it bores everybody else, does you no good, and doesn’t solve any problems”   -Zig Ziglar  (especially about people that inquire about your names)

About a year ago I transferred a bunch of names to Dotster and Netfirms because they has a $1.99 registrations and transfers plus 20% off of that with the right code. It was one of those things you knew would be painful, but you do it anyway because of the savings.

They are apart of the Afternic fast transfer program so at least there’s that. I reached the point dealing with these registrars that I was going to let anything I had registered there expire, if I liked the name I could always try and pick them up again in the drop.

Then they were added to the Godaddy expired auctions lineup, making it a hell of alot easier for someone to pick it up before it drops. Previously I think these names went to Snapnames, and no one wanted to pay $79 for them.

They also send me a change of registrant email after the domain goes through auction. At first it was a “please approve the account change” email, so I always denied it just to mess with them, don’t know if it worked or not. Now it’s just a notice that your domain has changed accounts.

There only seem to be 2 buyers buying the names, I assume at closeouts. BuyDomains and someone using a gmail address of BuysDomains,  I have no idea if they’re related.

I’m curious if they’re using an algorithm to pick up the domains in auction or closeouts, I assume so. In any case, I decided to write about this, because as I was picking the list today I found that a large number of the names I was picking were my own damn names. So I decided to go in and renew a few of them. Renewing them cost me $18 at Dotster and $14 at Netfirms, If I hadn’t been lazy and more willing to deal with these stellar registrars I could have transferred them out before the auction.  I could even try that now, but I’d end up swearing at the help desk tech that tells me that I can’t transfer them out. By the time they made the ticket to get me the auth codes the auction would be over and they would push the domain into the winner’s account.

That is also another important point to note, I’m pretty sure that names are pushing right after the auction or after they’re bought in closeouts. In the past they went through the whole predetermined time period before they would leave your account.

So I apologize if there’s a name listed that I own and renewed.

PS: I haven’t gone blind yet, the eye still seems to work. I went to urgent care on Saturday. They told be to go to an eye Dr….

I have been domain investing for 10 years now.  For the last 8 years I been active and paying attention.  But I’ve really only figured out what I’m doing in the last 5.   I admit I was inspired to look at my purchases over the last 12 months by a tweet from Rick Schwartz that contained his recent purchases. I took a look and thought “I think I’ve done just as well” .  So I started looking and putting the list together.

Before I give you my takeaways after looking at my own list I’ll throw in a little background.   I’ve said it a thousand times but I’ll state it one more time.  I have never put in one cent of my “outside’ money into domains.  Every penny spent has come from selling domains, blogging, or my small sites.  It is a long slow process that has taken years. If I don’t have the money I don’t buy.  This year I had to protect a large amount of my bankroll for another purchase.  I have put in an offer on a piece of property that is waiting for someone else to buy the other section for sale. If it goes through I have to write a check for $20K within the week.  My wife doesn’t want to be a part and I’m on my own on the purchase. Like everything in life, if I spend it on a domain the land will close the next day and leave me scrambling for money. Even worse have to ask my wife for something she told me know ahead of time.    I tell you this because it left me a little “poorer” than last year and I passed on a quite of bit of lesser value names that normally I would buy.

I had planned on buying a lot more names at lower values and playing the Brandbucket/BIN Afternic game but I had some early success buying private names and decided to concentrate on those this year.  As discussed on DomainSherpa, I bought MonkeyWrench, Blowtorch, TheBigIsland, and Dustpan all privately.   A few of them took months and years to acquire.   I obviously filled the portfolio with LLLL.coms as well.  I am particular on what kind of LLLL.com I buy and you’ll notice a pattern of what kind of letters I like. Not going to see any Js or Ks in my names.  I buy them because I think they hold value as well as any domain and I sell one or two a year for $7K plus which pays for most of my purchases.  The LLLL.coms you see above were two sales rolled back into more LLLL.

As for asking prices on these, I am much much more patient than I have ever been.  Everything is going very well and I don’t need money nearly as much as I did while building my portfolio.  This site is doing fine and I have been selling a domain or two a month.  Add that to my sites and various other Internet income and I have a decent bankroll to spend each month

This month for example.  I should have one closing today for $2500 combined with $2500 worth of names I sold at DropCatch.  Add in this site and my other sites and I have over $10K to put in to domains without having to reduce the portfolio value very much.  I feel this is the secret to my domain investing career.  Selling domains yet increasing the quality of the portfolio.  The domain I sold for $2500 I bought for $17 on Godaddy 5 or 6 years ago.  The other advantage I have is I don’t have to take any money out to pay for stuff.  Although I do.  I do this to make my life more enjoyable so I take money out to do exactly that.  And if I miss a domain purchase or two because I did I had some fun I’m ok with that.  But I don’t have any reoccurring bills or payments in which I have to withdraw money.   This ability to reinvest lets my portfolio and my money grow at a much bigger rate than someone that has bills to pay. It also takes the pressure off of selling and in general, takes away all pressures.  This is all bonus.  Mums pay the bills, botany.com pays for the thrills.

Feel free to share some of the better names you’ve purchased this year.

Escrow.com

Game changing sale.  That’s what I’m looking for.  That sale that people say “aren’t you the guy that sold?”.   To get that sale I have to have a  few things. A name that deserves the price.  The ability to say no.  And about three or four truckloads of luck.  There is going to be a lot of “that’s too rich for me” responses on the way,  but I know I’ll get there.  Every year that passes the quality of my names goes up.  The names may not have gotten better, but they will be more expensive to acquire because of all the names that have been put into use.  The beach is filling up with houses.  The empty lot didn’t move any closer to the ocean but if there aren’t any more lots available yours looks a whole lot nicer.   It’s become very expensive to acquire good names but I think it only goes up from here.  I’m looking forward to being a part of it.

Here are today’s names, you have to click to see current price.

If you run a retail store, one of your most valuable assets to a bank is your merchant services aka credit cards.  If they can find a low tech, high volume family business its a no risk, easy money, account.  No chargebacks, no fraud, easy money.  As a nursery and plant seller we are a dream.  People call us pretty much every week asking to be our provider. But if you drill down it’s a complicated system with every credit card having a different rate.  Banks take their cut, credit card companies get their cut, merchant services get their cut and the true cost depends on what types of cards come through your store.  Over the years we have a great compilation of data to see exactly what kind of cards are being used.  I can’t tell you if it represents the entire US but we get about 40% debit and 60% credit.   With about 20% of the credit being high rate points cards. High rates being our charges of over 2.5%.  The more points and travel perks you have on your card the more a merchant is charged.  Nothing kills me more than a customer paying a giant bill with a high point card.  It can cost me 3% just to collect my money.  And I don’t want to charge extra because letting them use a credit cards generally leads to customers spending a lot more.  Often more than they can afford.

Our rates are about as good as they can get (non Giant business good)  but that’s because we have never had a chargeback.  Ever.  And not one case of fraud.  I can only imagine what an online company must deal with.  I say this because I moved to a new company and have negotiated a new rate.  Everything has a cost.  Want your money in 24 hours instead of 48?  It cost you.  Want to be able to batch out at 10pm instead of 6 pm?  It cost.  Some say its free for them. It’s not free, they just hide it.  Nothing is really free. I rolled the dice a little and went from a fixed rate to paying for each card.  All in the hopes that I get my 40% debit cards at .5% rate.  I figured figured my old companies  weren’t losing money losing money on the previous fixed rate or they would’t have renewed each year.  We’re going to find out.

And Happy Birthday to Donna Mahoney.  The woman that threw me out of Domain Boardroom.  It’s something I will never forget but I still want her to have a lovely birthday.  We all deserve a nice birthday.

Here are today’s names, you have to click to see current price.

Apparently the world will end today, I’m not sure what time, hopefully it’s after the auctions end and the commission is recorded. I’m not sure why stories like this even get published. A couple of random ass dudes that will have no credibility on Sunday get the media to write stories en mass about the world ending and even if they’re right no one will no be around to talk about it.  I guess it is fun to talk about since I decided to mention it.

If someone really does know the date of the end of the world, don’t even mention it unless it’s years away. It makes me think of the nuclear missle sirens in Japan and Guam. The siren goes off and you realize you have 45 seconds to live, how about just letting me watch the pretty glow before the end instead of the 45 seconds of shear terror.  I mean where are you gonna hide on an island that’s about to be hit but a nuclear bomb? Give me at least an hour and I can work with that, bury myself in the sand or something, but those missles fly too fast.

I’m not going to lie.  I’ve got an addiction problem.  I am addicted to a running shoe.   That wouldn’t be that big of a deal except it’s the world’s most expensive running shoe.  The VaporFly 4%.   Not the regular Vaporfly.  That’s for common folk.  The 4%.  It’s the shoe that Nike created for the attempt to break 2 hours in the marathon.  It is only 4 oz and returns 80% of energy.  Unheard of in a shoe.  And its the only Nike running shoes with a really wide toe box.   And the 4%?  That’s how much time you can take off your marathon time if you wear it.  4% reduction in overall time. That’s after hundreds of runs of testing.   And it does.  I absolutely fly in the shoes and my legs aren’t as tired when I run in them.   But here’s the catch.  They are $250 off the shelf and they sold out immediately so they are $300 plus in the resale market.  Fortunately I wear 12.5 so they are running $300. If I wore a common size it would be more.    They could rerelease them but they released the Vaporfly which is the same shoe but its missing the high end foam that returns the energy.  And the carbon fibre shock plate isn’t really carbon fibre.  It’s coated and the response is different.  Not the same.

So I’ve been using Ebay, GOAT, and StockX to stock up.  Spending thousands of dollars filling the closet with the shoe that I have trouble running without. I purposely run in other shoes 3 days a week just to get the feel of “regular” shoes and to keep the miles off my special shoes.  Add to the fact it cost me more per mile than my car.  Cost me about .75 cents a mile.   I get 500 miles out of all my running shoes before the soles lose their air and that’s only about 8 to 9 weeks per pair of shoe.  They are still good shoes to wear around but start to pound the legs when they get worn out.   So if anyone loves this blog and wants to feed the beast I wear size 12.5.   Or better yet, buy yourself a pair.  You’ll love them, I promise.  Just don’t get at 12.5.  I need ALL of them  Here are today’s names, you have to click to see current price.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the victims and all the families and friends of victims affected in the Las Vegas shooting. I was watching footage of the shooting and kept thinking “wow, I’ve been right in that area every January for the past several years at Namescon”, and something like this could have happened at anytime.

I say this not as a deterrent to living life or changing my behavior because of terrorist or extremist attacks, but rather to be prepared and situationally aware, to know how to react should something like this happen to me.

Being better prepared for an event like this can be as simple as knowing a few life saving concepts. The first thing to consider, and one that was not easily accomplished  in the Las Vegas attack, is to neutralize the threat. If you listen to the police radio traffic, several officers voice this concern while others are calling out the locations of the wounded. One of the officers summed it up great, saying we need to take this guy down before there’s more casualties.

If you can, move the patient and yourself to a position of concealment or cover as quickly as possible. Hiding behind something that won’t stop a bullet is preferable sitting out in the open, it will make it harder for you to be recognized as a target.

Another important thing to consider is the use of tourniquets. This could consists of a belt or anything that could be used to stop the flow of arterial blood coming from an extremity wound. Even if a victim has multiple gunshot wounds stopping the flow of arterial blood in the extremities will prolong survivability. For the longest time there was a stigma to tourniquet use, there was a misconception that the person might lose the limb if a tourniquet was applied. The fact of the matter is that loss of limb from a tourniquet is very low percentage and is insignificant when the alternative is complete exsanguination.

The tourniquet needs to be tight enough so that it stops the flow of blood completely. It also should be applied on the single longbone of the affected limb. Your femur and humerus are the single long bones, so any easy way to remember tourniquet placement is above the knee or above the elbow, obviously between the heart and the wound. The distal ends of your extremities have two main bones, this make it harder to compress the artery against the bone with the tourniquet.

One of the most inspiring things that happened during the Vegas attack were people helping people by loading them onto whatever they could find and taking them to a vehicle that could transport them to the hospital. The thing with regular Emergency Medical Service during an event like this, is that they will not enter the hot zone until it’s confirmed that the threat has been neutralized, and in reality most of the wounded don’t need an ambulance or even a Medic, they need to get to the operating room as fast as possible. If you stop the bleeding and control the airway the best you can, then taking the person to definitive care as fast as possible is the best treatment for them.  EMS Advanced life support is limited in its capabilities when dealing with trauma. Iv’s are essentially pointless and we don’t carry whole blood. Sure, I can give you fluids to assist with blood circulation (not as beneficial as once thought in loss of blood shock as it can diminish clotting factors),  decompress a tension pneumothorax or intubate the patient, but like I said, what  they really need is a surgeon.

If you come across someone that is not breathing, has no pulse and there are still other people wounded and breathing, leave them and move on to someone that is breathing. Technically you should adjust the airway and look listen and feel for breathing, but someone shot lying in a pool of blood, that doesn’t appear to be breathing and has no discernible pulse is more than likely dead.  The chances of successful resuscitation after traumatic cardiac arrest are very, very slim. It’s not a pleasant thing to consider, but your efforts are better utilized helping someone that has a chance. Obviously if the amount of rescuers matches or exceeds the number of patients then give it your best shot.

So if you take anything away from this post and find yourself in one of these situations, remember if possible to, stop the threat, get to cover, stop the bleeding, get to a trauma center. The more these attacks happen the more likely anyone reading this will find themselves in a similar situation and the principles can apply to any situation that you find injured people.

I made it to a computer just in time to finish this post. I spent the night on the water in DC, and caught this beast. The first blue catfish I’ve ever caught and it’s as tall as I am, if it could walk.

I just watched the first three seasons of House of Cards, so I imagine the fish grew to this size eating the bodies of political causalities, killed and thrown into the Potomac.

No crypto talk today, well maybe a little domain related crypto talk.  I’ve been selling names with “coin” in them like they’re going out of style, as well as a sale yesterday with the word “chain”. No crazy prices, the range is from around $599 to $2400 retail, with a few $59-$200 wholesale at Dropcatch.

Reading the comments from Shane’s post yesterday, Jeff stated he thought it might be better to invest in Crypto right now than in Domains and that he was having trouble selling his portfolio wholesale. It could be true for Jeff that crypto would have a better return than domains, I’m not sure what his situation is.

There are several points we can take away from this concept.  First, there are so many variables in domain investing that I have trouble comparing it to any other industry, especially block chain tech and all it’s intricacies.

Obviously we can make correlations in domain sales to other events like the strength of the economy, but since each one of these little bastards is unique unto itself, we’d have to judge each and every name on it’s own merits and then throw timing and exposure into the mix. If we did all this then we might be able to start comparing domains to other industries.

Selling domains at moderate retail prices is the best way to gauge the overall strength of a particular domain niche(IMO). For example, if I sell drone or vr names in the aftermarket that’s great, but I know I’m selling to the domaining crowd and selling into speculation. Niche speculation isn’t confirmed until I start seeing numerous examples of these names being bought on platforms geared to the end users.

I can take the data in my opening paragraph and have reasonable confidence that the crypto/coin space is going somewhere based on the spike in retail sales.  Maybe it’s just short term, but there’s definitely momentum in the niche.

Another thing to consider is the way we bandy about  the term “investor”. I think we need to make a distinction between “seller” and “investor”. Not that we can’t be both, but if your names don’t sell for minimum wholesale prices, then more than likely  they should be classified as product inventory, rather than an asset class of an investor. There’s nothing wrong with being a seller and carrying inventory, I categorize most of my portfolio as product.

Making the distinction between product and investment might help you sell more names as you will learn to set prices accordingly. The thing with investment domains is that you don’t need to sell them. You can carry them as long as you want because they have value as an asset that should/could appreciate. You will normally be able to get a decent price for them as long as your not trying to make bail, or if the timing is right you could score a big payday.

So to sum in all up, selling domains and investing in domains are two different things. Making this distinction can be helpful. Jeff, I’m not picking on you, rather I thank you for giving me something to write about. I think it’s a bad idea to try and liquidate your 4500 domains to move into a completely different, risky, investment instrument that you admittedly don’t know much about.  I think you should focus on the minimum $36K you’ve put into domains, sell some for reasonable retail prices, then take that money and experiment with crypto.  Just an idea, good luck.

Have a name at auction and need more exposure? Send me an email. We Charge $10 per name per day. We may be able to help. If you have an auction you want to promote, email us for details.*All names chosen by us, Shane and Josh . (ie you click through and purchase a name you like) or an occasional paid listing. Everything we say is based on our own research or is opinion. Do your own due diligence. That means look it up yourself if you don’t think the stats or our opinion is correct. We hand choose the names but we are paid to make this list by both the auction houses, individuals that are auctioning names, and Godaddy affiliate links. Keep that in mind and only buy names that YOU think are good
